How do I remove a stuck needle from my sewing machine?
I have to change the needle on my Brother XR-65 and it will not come out. I followed the instructions in my manual and loosened the needle clamp screw, but the needle will not come out. I tried using pliers, but don't want to damage my machine. Is there anything I can do?
I don't know if this is related to the problem, but I've also been unable to get the machine to use any other stitch besides a straight stitch recently.
The two problems are probably not related. Most likely. Anyway, to get the needle out, you might want to use a little oil, just a little. Be sure the machine is unplugged, just to be safest. If you don't have regular sewing machine oil or all-purpose household oil -- like you'd use on a door hinge or a bike chain -- you can use WD40 or something like it. Give just a little squirt on the part where the needle is stuck. Let it set for a few minutes. Then use your pliers again. You may as well dust out and oil the rest of the machine (read the owner's manual to see where the oil goes, if you don't know) while you're waiting.
As to the straight stitch only problem, if the oil doesn't help, contact a repair shop. If your machine has a sequence you need to follow to change from straight to other stitches, be sure you are correctly following this sequence. (I had one once that needed dial A set to 3 before dial B could be set to select a new stitch. Friends who borrowed it regularly told me it wouldn't change stitches because they hadn't listened well enough to remember it when I told them how to do it.)

Hobby Knife or X-Acto Knife

A ruler is ideal to use for a straight edge when you want to guide knife cuts and can also be used for measuring. It is a good idea to get a ruler that has both imperial and metric measurements. These are very cheap and can be found at all hobby and craft stores as well as at stationery stores. If possible, buy one that has a base made of cork as it will not slide away from you on the surface when using it.
Wire Cutters
This tool is ideal for cutting wire as well as small sections of extra plastic and metal from moulded items in kits. They are available at most hardware and electrical shops.

Will heat help straighten a hanger?
I'm making something that needs straight hangers, but I'm having trouble getting it perfectly (or even close) to straight. I'm using pliers too. If I heat it up will it make it easier to move and what should I use to heat?
Hangers are made of a high carbon steel so that they won't bend easily in use. Heating the wire to red hot will soften it but it will be difficult to handle. My advise is to use two pliers, one to hold the wire while you bend it with the other. That's how I do it.
